A platform built on four pillars
Confidentiality-preserving data science, designed to scale.
The principles
Dunal builds on four principles that work together: protect confidentiality, scale the process, preserve utility, and operate with full transparency. Together, they ensure Dunal is not a data broker, but a trusted insight broker.
A. Eyes-off data science
Individual data never moves to the analyst — instead, the analyst's algorithms go to the data. Data owners keep full control of their data at all times, and analysts receive only anonymised, derived results. Confidentiality is protected throughout the entire analysis process.
B. Differential privacy
Conventional anonymisation requires privacy experts and is hard to scale. Dunal uses differential privacy to automatically and transparently quantify disclosure risk, with safety guarantees that hold permanently — resistant to future technology and new auxiliary data. This standardised approach reduces compliance costs and gives regulators a consistent, auditable basis for evaluating data safety.
C. Utility-first analytics
Protecting confidentiality is not enough if results are unreliable. Dunal's approach accounts for all sources of uncertainty and guards against pitfalls like confirmation bias, selection bias, and underestimated uncertainty — providing a formal way to balance privacy and utility, and helping clients find the strongest protection that still supports reliable conclusions.
D. Mission-lock
Dunal is a mission-driven company acting as a neutral, safe data intermediary. This mission is structurally protected: any change requires approval from an independent guardian body. Dunal operates only in Switzerland, on Swiss IT infrastructure, and never uses client data for any purpose beyond technical maintenance — giving data contributors complete assurance of neutrality.
